This region of the country is known for its fine architecture, rich culture and exotic plants and people. You definitely want to take the time to learn what you can about the area when you're in Coral Gables. Here is a list of some of the sights you don't want to miss while you're in town.
• Lowe Art Museum. This is a museum found on the campus of the University of Miami. You'll want to check out artwork from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, especially works by some of Europe's most highly regarded artists. This museum is on Stanford Drive on campus.
• Merrick House. This home is the place that started the town of Coral Gables. The home was bought by the Merrick family in 1899 and named the home "Coral Gables," because that's what the home was made out of. The family made it its quest to start a new city on the family property. And that's exactly what they did. The house is no longer called "Coral Gables," but is named after the family that basically created the city.
• Chinese Village. This is one of the villages that was created in the city to make people of other nationalities feel more at home and to let residents to experience different cultures. Twenty different such cities were planned for construction; only seven were built. This village can be found on Castania Avenue.
• Venetian Pool. This is a quarry where coral rock was found in the ground to build homes in the area. It is now a pool and is a historical sight. Believe it or not, this is the only pool listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This pool can be found on Sevilla.
• Biltmore Hotel. This is perhaps one of the most famous hotels in all of southern Florida. The Biltmore Hotel is famous because it was once a hospital in the area during World War II, but was a hotel before and after. The Duke and Dutchess of Windsor are said to have been regular guests at this hotel.
